Improving Image Quality With Lightroom Enhance
Lightroom’s Enhance feature (in both Classic and Desktop versions) is one of those specialized tools that can make a big difference in the right situations. It’s not something you’ll use on every image, but when you need that extra boost—whether it’s for enlarging an image or bringing out subtle details—it can be incredibly effective.
One particular benefit of the Enhance function is that unlike other noise reduction or upscaling plugins which produce a psd or tiff version of your image, Enhance creates a new raw version your image, which means you can continue to use all of Lightroom’s raw editing functions at their fullest potential.
Most people are familiar with Enhance through its Denoise feature, but there’s much more it can do. Enhance offers three distinct options, each designed for a specific purpose.
Here’s a closer look:
- Denoise uses AI to significantly reduce noise in your images, making it perfect for high-ISO or low-light scenarios where noise can become a distraction.
- Super Resolution uses AI to upscale your image by up to four times without losing quality. This means a 24mp file becomes a 96mp file, which is great for making large prints, or regaining resolution from a heavily cropped file. And the quality of the results is as good as any other solution I’ve tried.
- Raw Details enhances the quality of your raw files by refining textures and minimizing artifacts. It provides a detailed and clean starting point, ideal for those who want to make the most out of their raw captures.
It’s important to note that Denoise and Super Resolution cannot be used on the same image simultaneously—you’ll need to choose either Denoise and Raw Deatails, Super Resolution and Raw details, or Raw details alone. Additionally, once an image has been “enhanced” with any of the options, it cannot be enhanced again.
