Mastering Composition—Active vs Passive Areas

The picture frame is the rectangle you impose on the world around you as your compositional tool. The edges of the frame play a fundamental role in the success of your composition. They define the boundaries of the shapes that you include in the picture as well as influence how a viewer moves through an image.

The edges have active and passive areas that you can use to strengthen your composition and emphasize the most important parts of your image. This graphic from a recent Academy livestream illustrates it in more detail…

The next time you’re out with your camera, practice placing lines and shapes alone the edges and leading from the corners of your image. Then analyze the pictures afterwards and see if you can notice which images feel and look better compositionally.

Are the corners utilized as best as possible? Are there any elements along the edge of the frame that feel distracting?

The better you get at understanding and using the edges of the frame, the stronger your images will become.
