Why You Should Start a Photography Project in 2025

As a new year approaches, one of my favorite ways to stay motivated is to create a list of potential projects to work on. From that list, I pick the ones that excite or challenge me the most and commit to them for the short-term future.

This approach isn’t just about staying busy—it’s about your potential. Tackling bigger, harder problems requires creativity, and that process fosters meaningful growth and intrinsic motivation. That’s why I always recommend project-based photography, rather than simply making random images.

A personal photography project offers benefits you can’t get from casual shooting, no matter your skill level or ambitions. Here’s why:

  1. Focused Energy and Purpose

A project channels your energy toward a single goal, helping you move beyond photographing things that just “catch your eye.” This is super powerful because your creative energy gets diluted the more you apply it in many different directions. A single beam of light is more powerful than one that is diffuse and scattered.

  1. Creative Constraints = Breakthroughs

By limiting your options, you force yourself to see the same subject in new ways. Creativity isn’t about endless variety—it’s about deep exploration. Depth over breadth is the general idea here.

  1. Intrinsic Motivation

Working on something you’re genuinely passionate about naturally boosts focus and drive. Working on projects has definitely helped me stay engaged with photography when the voice of resistance gets loud—usually at 4am when the alarm reminds me of my plans to go out for sunrise.

  1. Accelerated Growth

There’s no better way to improve than by consistently working on the same challenges—whether technical, aesthetic, or mental. Practice and repetition are key to internalizing the fundamentals so that they become second nature—the key ingredient to entering the all important “flow” state.

  1. Discover Hidden Connections

Projects help you notice relationships between images, subjects, gear, or even your mindset that might otherwise go unnoticed. There’s no better way to learn what your strengths and weaknesses are.

  1. A Sense of Fulfillment

Completing a project brings a deeper sense of accomplishment than accumulating unrelated images ever could. This is especially true when you share your work with others that makes a difference in their lives.

  1. Build a Cohesive Body of Work

A project is the foundation of storytelling in photography. It allows you to create a unified portfolio rather than a scattered collection of images. Storytelling is where your images go from individual “words” to sentences and paragraphs that can communicate something deep and meaningful to others.

What Kind of Project Should You Work On?

Your project should have a clear theme or focus. For example, It could revolve around:

  • A specific location, subject, or color.
  • A particular mood or emotion
  • A lens or technique

The key is specificity. A well-defined project gives you direction and keeps you inspired.

Another plus is that your project doesn’t have to be purely for practice. You can use it to create something tangible, like a Blurb book in Lightroom, a printed folio, artist notecards, a yearly calendar, or even a multi-media slideshow. Or you can simply use it to reignite your creativity and take your skills to the next level.

Personally, I’ve been working on photography projects for over a decade, and it remains one of my favorite ways to stay creatively engaged.
